Curlews on the shore at Groyne Point
From early autumn onwards, the number of birds visiting the Helford builds up, peaking in mid-winter.
Some use the river as a re-fuelling station on their long journeys; others settle in for the winter, before the migration urge sets them moving again. Curlew, Redshank, Dunlin, Turnstone and Oystercatcher are the most common visitors.
The most majestic bird on the Helford is the Grey Heron. In recent years, a small white heron, the Little Egret, has been seen in increasing numbers in the creeks of the upper river.
